Beginning of History
The first year of the Imperial Calendar begins with the coronation of Cyrus the Great; founder of the Achaemenid Empire and the first ruler to unify Iran. This event took place more than 2,500 years ago.
Return to Roots
Unlike many cultures, Iran has preserved much of its ancient traditions, many of which are rooted in the Zoroastrian faith. Over time, however, these traditions became influenced by foreign elements and drifted from their original form. The Imperial Calendar is a step toward returning to these roots and restoring their authenticity.
Official Adoption
On 24 Esfand 2534 (March 15, 1976 AD), the Imperial Calendar was officially adopted as Iran’s national calendar. In this system, the last two digits of each year indicate how many years have passed since the beginning of the reign of the Shah of Iran His Imperial Majesty Mohammad Reza Pahlavi on 26 Shahrivar 2500 (September 17, 1961 AD).
